How to become a grown-up in 468 easy(ish) steps.

Step 211: Do not keep things that make you feel sad and/or bad in your house

… or even things that you just don’t like, or aren’t useful/beautiful. The world is full of things that annoy and upset you; no need to have any of them in the one small place that you have control over.

Personal example: Like many females, I have Feelings About My Body. I won’t get into them here except to say that some tend to the more neurotic side of things. Anyway, a little while ago I gained some weight, and a couple of my very favorite dresses no longer fit because I had been very thin.

For awhile, I kept them in my closet and every time I looked at them I hated myself a little bit. But eventually, I realized that having something in my house that triggered those feelings is really unhealthy. So I called a dear friend whom I thought would enjoy them, and asked if she would borrow them for awhile. If she ends up keeping them forever, that’s fine, too.

Nothing is so beautiful or valuable that it’s worth feeling miserable over. If it’s something that you just can’t part with (like perhaps love letters from a relationship that ended recently), then ask a friend if you can store it over there for awhile.
